In late May our own Mark Hansen journeyed east to the small town of Waterloo, WI, to take a bike fit course and your the home and headquarters of Trek. Their "Precision Fit" program is one of the many Trek has developed to support bike shops by personally sharing knowledge, science, and methods.
Trek is a multifaceted company with a huge facility on the outskirts of the tiny town, population 3,334, situated many miles from the nearest major population base -- right where Trek started in 1975.
Trek's huge facility is easily the biggest in or anywhere near Waterloo and they are one of the town's main employers.
Walking in there is a palpable feeling of openness, cleanliness and modernity.
The massive lobby highlighted some of the best bikes in Trek's current lineup.
This 10lb Emonda build was eye-popping. (Yes that scale reads ten point zero pounds!)
Trek has a really nice timeline of bikes on display. A past to present look at how their bike philosophy evolved out of a love for touring frames.
An impressive wall of carbon offerings from Trek, some pretty fast bikes hanging up here!
Some background and a tribute to Trek's visionary founder, Dick Burke. His son John now runs the company.
Memorabilia and bikes tell the story of Trek's early evolution.
This area was frequently filled with employees having coffee and engaging in big picture conversations. Trek strives to have multiple workspaces around the campus to change perspectives and stimulate thought.
Here's the real reason I visited Trek. By attending Trek's 3-day fit seminar using their science driven Precision Fit methodology, I hoped to bring new and updated skills back with me to Sunshine.
By learning on some of the best fit equipment in the world, we were able to hone our fitting skills for use in any circumstance.
The sizecycle was the coolest piece of tech I saw. Endlessly it removed the need to constantly be switching stems and saddles to make even minor adjustments. Turn a lever and you're done!
By fitting other students we were able to see directly how this new fitting knowledge is put to use. Over a span of 3 days I had a great time immersing myself in fit with like minded shop employees from all over the US.
Each student was assigned workbooks and materials to learn with and take back with us so we could spread fit knowledge back at our shops.
Trek's dedicated fit area offers plenty of room to comfortably work. Although the Hal 9000 of fit cycles may not be coming home with us, we're looking for ways to add some dedicated space to our fitting area to make your experience more comfortable.
Trek's fit science helps riders and bikes of all types. Our instructors hoped to teach us that while technology is great, a good fitter brings solid personal experience to the table.
Thanks again to Trek for hosting the 3-day fit training. We're looking forward to bringing new fit techniques and information to you at Sunshine!
